DPS has 3rd Gates scholarship winner

Northern High School senior Ming Lin has been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium scholarship, joining two seniors from Hillside High School with the honor. The scholarship is designed to reduce financial barriers and increase minority representation in computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences.

Herald Sun Wins State Press awards

The staff of Durham's Herald-Sun newspaper won eight awards in the N. C Press Association’s News, Editorial and Photojournalism Awards judging.The Herald-Sun’s awards were sports news reporting, first place, Harold Guttman; sports news reporting, second place, Steve Wiseman; general news photography, third place, Christine Nguyen; feature photography, second place, Christine Nguyen; feature photography, third place, Bernard Thomas; sports photography, first place, Bernard Thomas; best video, third place, Christine Nguyen and John McCann.

Durham Herald Sun Newspaper to Move Near Northgate Mall

After 24 years at a site on Pickett Road in Durham, the Herald-Sun is moving to the Northgate mall area by the end of year.The Herald-Sun will occupy the entire second floor and half of the third floor of a building at 1530 N. Gregson St., which also houses a BB&T bank branch.

Bob Ashley Returns to Role as Herald-Sun Editor

Bob Ashley will return to his role as the editor of The Herald-Sun after after serving a year as executive director of Preservation Durham. Outgoing editor Nancy Wykle who is leaving for a job as Department of Social Services volunteer programs director at the Volunteer Center of Durham. Ashley has a 42-year career in newpapers serving the last six of those as editor of the The Herald-Sun.

The Herald-Sun Wins Eight NC Press Association Awards

The Herald-Sun was honored with eight North Carolina Press Association awards for 2011 including: first place for sports coverage in the 12, 500-34,999 circulation division, second place for best video, second place in the multimedia project category, and third place in the features design category. Individual awards went to staff photographer Bernard Thomas, first place in the sports photography category for the12,500-34,999 circulation division; Neil Offen placed second and John McCann third in the lighter columns category; and Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan placed second in the criticism category.

The Herald-Sun Launches We Are Durham Magazine

The Herald-Sun has launched We Are Durham Magazine, a glossy magazine to be published quarterly. The magazine will focus on community content as well as newcomer information. Civic clubs, faith organization, government-related group, schools, nonprofits and the arts will be represented.
