Durham Public Schools will offer a fire acadamy in the 2016-17 school year

Durham Public Schools will offer a fire academy, for high school students who want to become firefighters, starting in the 2016-17 school year. The program is a partnership among the schools, the Fire Department and Durham Technical Community College and approved by the state Department of Public Instruction.

Durham Fire Chief Dan Curia has promoted Chris Iannuzzi to deputy fire chief, the second-highest rank in the Durham Fire Department.

City of Durham Names New Fire Chief

City Manager Tom Bonfield has announced the appointment of Daniel Curia as the new chief of the Durham Fire Department. Curia has served as the interim fire chief since December 2012.

Deputy Chief Daniel Curia has been appointed as the interim chief of the Durham Fire Department. Curia fills the interim chief spot left vacant by Chief Bruce T. Pagan, Jr., who will retire December 1, 2012.

Durham Fire Chief Bruce Pagan has made several recent promotions, including promoting Edward Reid to fire marshal; Jody Morton to assistant fire marshal; Chris Iannuzzi to assistant fire chief; Charles Bolar to battalion fire chief; Joel Gullie to fire inspector and Daniel Mitcham to fire technician.

Durham Firefighter Climbs Emprire State Building in Full Gear for Charity

Durham city firefighter Touché Howard joined 500 runners from around the world to climb to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City to raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The 50-year-old Howard climbed all 1,567 steps in 34 minutes and 45 seconds and was the only firefighter to compete wearing firefighting gear and using an air pack.
