The Durham Sports Commission is officially established
The Durham Sports Commission has been officially established by the Durham City Council and the Durham Board of County Commissioners to recruit sporting events to Durham. It will be a new department within the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau, funded by the local hotel “bed tax,” and it will be under the direction of an appointed board. These are the newly appointed Durham Sports Commission members:City of Durham Appointees: Desmond Scott – Owner, Prime Athletic Training and Fitness Institute, Dan Hill – Founder of Hill Chesson & Woody benefits consulting firm, Omar Beasley – owner MC Bail Bonding. Durham County Appointees: Ingrid Wicker-McCree – Athletic Director of NCCU, Tommy Hunt – retired, Atlantic Coast Conference, Dwight Perry – Ophthalmologist/Partner at NC Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat. Durham Chamber Appointees:George Habel – Durham Bulls Baseball Club, Chris Kennedy – Senior Deputy Director, Duke Athletics, Terrence Holt – Holt Brothers Construction LLC.

Durham City Council approves $409.9M budget for 2016-17
The City Council has unanimously approved a $404.9 million budget for the fiscal year 2016-17, beginning July 1.The budget represents an increase of about 4 percent over last year and includes funding for 20 new Durham Police Department officers and a three-year phase-in for a take-home car program for officers, a three-year phase-in for a $15 minimum wage for all full-time city employees and the inclusion of Veterans Day as an official city holiday.

Catotti says she won’t run again for Durham council
City Councilwoman Diane Catotti said Wednesday that she will not seek re-election this fall.She follows her colleague Eugene Brown, who announced June 5 that he is leaving the council, also after three terms. Their announcements leave two vacancies among three at-large council seats to be filled in this fall’s election, along with the mayor’s chair.

Moffitt Appointed to Ward 3 City Council Seat
