Durham Public Schools will offer a fire acadamy in the 2016-17 school year

Durham Public Schools will offer a fire academy, for high school students who want to become firefighters, starting in the 2016-17 school year. The program is a partnership among the schools, the Fire Department and Durham Technical Community College and approved by the state Department of Public Instruction.

County Commissioners help raise pay for school employees

Durham County Commissioners decided to fund $1.1 million towards the 2.2 million school district leaders are seeking for employee raises.The county asked for $2.2 million to give 3 percent pay raises for classified employees which would include low-paid employees who aren't teachers.

School board member declines to seek reelection in 2016

Leigh Bordley has confirmed, after serving on the school board since 2008, she will not seek reelection in 2016. Three of the seven seats of the board will be up for election in the 2016 school board election.

Durham Students' Art to Decorate US Capitol

Jordan High School student Rachel Geoffrion and Durham School of the Arts senior, Zeke Seamans, both won a nationwide competition of student artwork to have their pieces displayed in  in the U.S. Capitol building for one year. Both  received two round trip tickets to Washington, D.C., for a recognition ceremony.

DPS Names Three New School Principals

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Bert L’Homme announced the appointment of three new principal hires, filling vacancies at Club Boulevard Elementary School (Terry Phillips), Neal Middle School (Michael Fuga)and Jordan High School (Kerry Chisnall).

Three Durham Public Schools win national awards

Three Durham Public Schools Montessori programs were recognized among the best magnet programs in the country this week with the announcement of the 2015 Magnet Schools of America national awards. Lakewood Montessori Middle School and Morehead Montessori Magnet Elementary School were named Schools of Excellence and George Watts Montessori Magnet Elementary School was named a School of Distinction by the National Association of Magnet and Theme-based Schools

Fayetteville Elementary Teacher Wins $175,000 Grant

Tomika R. Altman-Lewis, a Fayetteville Street Elementary School teacher is one of six public school teachers from across the state who has received a $175,000 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Science and Mathematics Teachers for professional development, salary supplement and equipment and supplies for the school.

Durham Public Schools to Offer 355 Staff Four-Year Contracts

Durham Public Schools will offer 355 teachers and other school support personnel four-year contracts under a new law designed to end tenure in North Carolina’s public schools. This represent 25 percent of the 1,422 people eligible for four-year contracts.
