Durham Parks and Recreation offers free programs to city residents

Durham Parks and Recreation is offering free programs, activities, and events to city residents as part of a new pilot program designed to encourage residents to get out and recreate more.The fitness center, open gym and computer lab offered at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St., is now open free to city residents.

Several Durham venues to host 2016 Powerade State Games

The Powerade State Games of North Carolina, the largest multi-sport, amateur athletic sporting event will be held in the Triangle, will host events in Raleigh, Cary and Durham from June 4 - June 26, 2016.  Over 12,000 athletes will participate in athletics ranging from table tennis to wrestling. Durham will have several venues that host events such as Duke University, Durham Parks and Recreation locations and new this year, the American Tobacco Campus, which will host a one-time-only “pop-up” disc golf course that will wind its way through campus, including the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Durham Park Gets A Facelift

Solite Park, at 4704 Fayetteville Road, has had a facelift. New features include a brand-new starting line/entrance, new drainage system, newly paved parking lot, a group pavilion with picnic tables, an outdoor grill, a kid’s playground, a basketball court, a water fountain and a restroom facility.

Work to begin on Old North Durham Park

Users of the City of Durham’s Old North Durham Park should take note that construction is set to begin next month. Then work will close the park until August and impact vehicle traffic around the park t 310 W. Geer St.

Elmira Avenue Park Wins $15K Sprite Spark Parks Grant

Elmira Avenue Park received a $15,000 grant from the Sprite Spark Parks Project to fund a new basketball goal system, repair the surface and re-stripe the courts. The Sprite Spark Parks Project initiative refurbishes courts in public parks and recreation centers across the country based on a voting process. Elmira Avenue Park receive over 41,000 votes.

Parks & Rec to Launch Rock the Park Summer Concert Series

Durham Parks and Recreation will launch its Rock the Park movie and concert series on Saturday, June 9 at Durham Central Park. The series features a free movie or concert at various parks throughout the summer months.

New Park Opens in Durham

Durham Parks and Recreation will host the official ribbon cutting ceremony for Old Chapel Hill Road Park (3751 SW Durham Dr.) on August 26 at 5:30 pm.
