New burger franchise Built to open at the Streets at Southpoint.

Built Custom Burgers will be opening in early 2017 in the food court area of the Streets at Southpoint mall in south Durham. Built will feature a build-your-own burger line similar to how Chipotle makes burritos, and MOD Pizza assembles individual pizzas.

Juju, Asian Fusion Restaurant to Open in Shops at Erwin Mill

Durham chef-owner Charlie Deal will open Juju, an Asian Fusion restaurant focusing on a la carte dim sum at Durham’s new Shops at Erwin Mill on Ninth Street in July. The restaurant will be located in a 4,721-square-foot corner space and will also have a large outdoor dining patio.

A 60,424-square-foot Food Lion grocery store located at the intersection of Sherron Road and N.C. 98 in east Durham has been sold to Hackney Real Estate of Richmond, VA.

Durham Cooks Win NC State Fair Competitions


Durham is home to several winners of the N.C. State Fair Special Cooking Competitions held during the fair in Raleigh. Winning cooks from Durham include:

  • Marci Rakshys who won first place and $200 in the N.C. Apple Growers Association Apple Recipe Contest for her recipe, Grilled Granny Smith Apple Caprese. 
  • Silke Bourgeois took home second place in the Incredible Edible Egg Appetizer/Picnic Recipe Contest for Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce with Feta and Chickpeas
  • Rebecca Lobach won second place in the Karo Creative Cookie & Dessert Contest for her Caramel Crunch Turtle Cookies
  • Robert Bourgeois took home second place in the Anything But Ordinary! Sweet Potato Recipe Contest for his Vegetable and Sweet Potato Casserole.

The Pit to Open in Durham's Central Park District

A second location of the Raleigh restaurant The Pit is slated to open next year in a portion of a building at 321 W. Geer St in Durham's Central Park District. The restaurant which serves whole-hog, pit-cooked pork barbecue as well as turkey barbecue and barbecued tofu is expected to seat about 250 people and to employ about 150 people.

Piedmont Restaurant has hired Jeffrey Satterly as its new chef de cuisine. Satterly, the former executive chef at Frazier’s in Raleigh, will take over from Chef Marco Shaw.

El Coyote Bar & Grill to Open Erwin Terrace Location

A second El Coyote Bar & Grill location is slated to open in Durham's Erwin Terrace development. The restaurant is slated to open in early Fall and will serve food similar to that served in the current location.

Alley 26, a 'farm-to-sip' eatery and bar, will open in downtown Durham at 320 E. Chapel Hill St. The restaurant's proprietor Shannon Healy has transitioned from his role as general manager of Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill to open Alley 26.

Another Broken Egg Cafe to Open on Erwin Road

Another Broken Egg Cafe will open at 2608 Erwin Road on April 23. It will be the first restaurant in North Carolina for the chain.
