Self-Help merges with Greater Piedmont Credit Union

Self-Help Credit Union has merged with Greater Piedmont Credit Union.. Self-Help was founded in Durham 26 years ago, and has provided more than $6.9 billion in financing to individuals and businesses typically undeserved by traditional financial institutions.With the merger, Self-Help now has 20 branches in North Carolina and Virginia, which serve more than 65,000 people.

Self-Help Awarded Tax Credits in Federal Program to Spur Investment

Self-Help Ventures Fund in Durham has been awarded $25 million in tax credits that it can, in turn, use to try to attract private capital investments in low-income or distressed areas. The institution was one of three in the state awarded a slice of $120 million in New Market Tax Credit authority from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

Durham Businesses Win 2012 Triangle Green Business Challenge


The Triangle J Council of Governments recently named award winners for the 2012 Triangle Green Business Challenge. Awards were presented to three Durham businesses; Ninth Street Bakery, Self-Help Credit Union and BioCryst Pharmaceuticals. Twenty-one companies and organizations participated in the challenge to help businesses improve the efficiency and sustainability of their day-to-day operations.
