Duke Entrepreneurship Program Relocating to Durham Innovation District
The Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative, a program launched five years ago at Duke University to help catalyze startup ventures by faculty, staff, students and Duke alumni, has announced that it will be moving its operations to downtown Durham to be part of the new Durham Innovation District.

Duke ‘angel’ program to finance business start-ups program
Duke University announced that they will set up an angel-investment system to help faculty members, Duke University and other people tied to the school launch start-up businesses. Duke is seeding the innovation fund with $2 million of its own money. Officials hope to secure enough outside donations to give the fund $20 million to work with.

Durham's American Underground Expanding
American Underground, a hub for new and emerging businesses in downtown Durham, is expanding. The business accelerator, located in the American Tobacco Historic District, is leasing a second location, where it will offer another 22,000 square feet to house up to 50 fledgling companies.

Four Durham start-ups, Motaavi, ArchiveSocial, Impulsonic and Gema Touch have been awarded NC IDEA grants. NC IDEA provides grants to early stage companies in North Carolina and has awarded $2.5 million in grants to 67 companies statewide.

Durham-based companies Argyle Social, Automated Insights Inc., EvoApp, PharPoint Research Inc., Relevance Inc., and Zift Solutions Inc were named to the Council for Entrepreneurial Development's 25 North Carolina Companies to Watch list. The list recognizes growth-oriented companies in their second stage of development that demonstrate high performance in their markets, show innovative products or have other unique qualities.

Duke Senior Wins $25K Entrepreneurship Award
Duke University senior Michael Bernert has been selected as the first recipient of the ELI Social Entrepreneurship Year-To-Launch Award, an award designed to support student social entrepreneurship. Bernert was granted a $25,000 prize to launch his social venture, West African Ventures in Agriculture (WAVA LLC), is a company that makes investments in agricultural projects in Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Oregon native developed the idea after spending his sophomore summer participating in DukeEngage Sierra Leone.
