Latino Community Credit Union Honored for Service to Underserved Populations

The Durham-based Latino Community Credit Union was honored with the Desjardin Adult Financial Education Award in recognition of service to underserved populations by the Credit Union National Association. The credit union also recieved the Credit Union Times’ Trailblazer Award for Service to the Underserved. The Latino Community Credit Union has a free financial literacy program that includes workshops on topics including saving and budgeting, building credit, buying a vehicle, and purchasing a home.

Duke's Nicholas School Professor Earns Top Science Paper Honors

A peer-reviewed study by Heather Stapleton, assistant professor of environmental chemistry at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, has been named the top Science Paper of 2011 by the journal Environmental Science & Technology. The study identifies the presence of banned or potentially harmful flame-retardant chemicals in baby products.

Granda Named First Director of Duke's Center for Civic Engagement

Megan Granda has been named Duke's first executive director for the Center for Civic Engagement, the university's umbrella organization for civic engagement. Granda is the former executive director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Duke junior Jake Stauch won the $5,000 first prize at Durham's Startup Madness competition in the North Carolina schools category for his neuro-marketing company Neurospire.

Golf Course at Treyburn Country Club to Reopen

The Tom Fazio-designed golf course at Treyburn Country Club will reopen after a renovation that took nearly a year. Improvements to the course include the redesign of bunkers to increase relevance, the addition of new bunkers of certain holes, the installation of new drainage on each of the 18 rebuilt holes and the selection of a tolerant 96-2 blend of bent grass for the greens.

Durham Man Wins Tobacco Road Half-Marathon

Ronald Kirui of Durham placed second in the third annual Tobacco Road Marathon with a time of 2:46.43 and won the men's half-marathon with a time of 1:08:43.

Duke Composer Inducted into American Academy of Arts and Letters

Stephen Jaffe, Mary and James H. Semans Professor of Music Composition at Duke University, is one of ten new members to be inducted into The American Academy of Arts and Letters in May 2012. AW North Carolina Expands, Adds 250 Jobs

AW North Carolina, a Durham company that makes transmissions for Toyotas, will add as many as 250 jobs  at its plant in the Treyburn Industrial Park as it ramps up production as part of a multimillion-dollar expansion program. AW North Carolina will invest $14 million in the plant which currently employs 1,500 people.

Beach Sets World Record at 2012 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon

Duke University's Curtis Beach broke one world record and six personal records at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon in Nampa, Idaho. Beach broke his own previous world record in the 1,000 meters by running a time of 2:23.63. The 6,138 points that resulted in his overall Heptathlon win, placed Beach third on the all-time collegiate heptathlon list and also broke the all-time Duke and ACC record for the event.

Durham Scout Earns Eagle Rank

Joseph Byrum Linnartz of Durham Troop 412 has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouting. For his Eagle project, Linnartz led a crew that landscaped a raised-bed garden at Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill.

Ho-B Max Becomes Permanent Northgate Tenant

Ho-B Max, a retailer offering battery-operated, electronic hobby items including airplanes, cars, boats, helicopters, rockets, tanks, and trains, as well as repairs, and replacement parts, is setting up a permanent shop at Northgate Mall after taking up temporary residence during the holiday season.

Southpoint Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Streets at Southpoint will celebrate 10 years as Durham's super-regional shopping center this weekend. The 1.3-million-square-foot center boasts 150 stores, 12 of which are exclusive to the Triangle - management expects to add at least seven more exclusive retailers by the end of the year. The Streets at Southpoint welcomes nearly 250,000 visitors per week.

Rivers Named to All-ACC First Team

Duke Blue Devil guard Austin Rivers was named to the All-ACC first team as voted upon by the league's media. Rivers became just the seventh freshman in league history named to the all-conference first team. Juniors Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee also received All-ACC recognition for the first time in their careers with third team honors.

Polley Named American Tobacco Campus Property Manager

Rick Polley has been named the new property manager for downtown Durham's American Tobacco campus. Polley previously served as the director of asset management at Kane Realty Corp., a broker at Fonville Morisey and vice president of real estate portfolio leasing manager at BB&T.

Swansey Becomes Youngest Ever Champion of Duke Spelling Bee

Duke Regional Spelling Bee champion 10-year-old Ned Swansey of E.K. Powe Elementary School became the competition's youngest-ever winner, securing a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “moorage.” The bee went for 33 rounds - the longest stretch in the competition's history.

City of Durham's Purchasing Division Awarded Professional Honor

The City of Durham’s Purchasing Division has been awarded the Sustained Professional Purchasing Award (SPPA) for 2011. The award recognizes sustained excellence in purchasing standards during the previous calendar year and is the highest award a purchasing department or division can obtain within the Carolinas Association of Governmental Purchasing (CAGP). The criteria for the award include the use of technology, minority outreach, staff certification, customer training, vendor training, and the use of recycled products.

The Herald-Sun Wins Eight NC Press Association Awards

The Herald-Sun was honored with eight North Carolina Press Association awards for 2011 including: first place for sports coverage in the 12, 500-34,999 circulation division, second place for best video, second place in the multimedia project category, and third place in the features design category. Individual awards went to staff photographer Bernard Thomas, first place in the sports photography category for the12,500-34,999 circulation division; Neil Offen placed second and John McCann third in the lighter columns category; and Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan placed second in the criticism category.

Duke Prof Appointed to National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council

Randall A. Kramer, professor of environmental economics and global health at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and deputy director of the Duke Global Health Institute, has been appointed by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to serve on the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council. The council advises the secretary, the director of the National Institutes of Health and director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences on scientific program priorities related to environmental health research. Kramer will serve a three-year term.

Andrews Reappointed to Second Term as Dean of Duke School of Medicine

Dr. Nancy C. Andrews has been reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of the Duke School of Medicine. Andrews is also the vice chancellor for academic affairs for Duke Medicine a a professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology & Cancer Biology. A pediatric hematologist/oncologist by training, Andrews came to Duke in 2007 following a career as a physician/scientist at Harvard Medical School, where she also was dean for basic sciences and graduate studies.

Duke Coach P Named ACC Coach of the Year

Duke women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. This is her fifth season with the Blue Devils.

Krispy Krunchy Chicken Coming to Northgate Mall

Krispy Krunchy Chicken will open at Northgate Mall in mid-March. The 464-square foot space will feature a got-to-have variety of chicken wings cooked daily, traditional and crispy, accompanied by a smoking mix of Cajun-inspired sides such as red beans and rice, jambalaya, corn on the cob and honey biscuits.

MADD Honors 8 Durham Night Hawks

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) honored eight Durham Night Hawks, troopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol's Durham office, for going beyond their job requirement in making the state's roads safer. The honorees are: Sgt. Maurice DeValle, Sgt.
