8th Grader Becomes First DPS Student to Compete in Scripps Spelling Bee

Jesus Ayala Lara of Chewning Middle School became the first Durham Public Schools student to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Ayala Lara advanced through the third round by correctly spelling "quagmiry" and "splenetic" before being eliminated from the competition.
