Duke Athletics strengthen their security at events

Duke Athletics will implement new operational changes beginning  Feb. 6, at the men’s home game against N.C. State. Up to 20 detectors will be stationed inside and outside of entrances and all those in attendance will be required to pass through to enhance security at sporting events. Other changes include individual entrances and exits no longer being accessible and after the game, the court will no longer be available to the public. 

Several Durham venues to host 2016 Powerade State Games

The Powerade State Games of North Carolina, the largest multi-sport, amateur athletic sporting event will be held in the Triangle, will host events in Raleigh, Cary and Durham from June 4 - June 26, 2016.  Over 12,000 athletes will participate in athletics ranging from table tennis to wrestling. Durham will have several venues that host events such as Duke University, Durham Parks and Recreation locations and new this year, the American Tobacco Campus, which will host a one-time-only “pop-up” disc golf course that will wind its way through campus, including the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Duke University names new Engineering Dean

Duke University has named their new Engineering Dean; Ravi Bellamkonda. Currently, he is Professor and chair of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University.  He will begin his position at Duke University August 1.

Durham trash and recycling pickup schedule delayed

Durham residents regular trash and recycling collections will be delayed by two days for the entire week of January 25-29.  Monday customers will have collections on Wednesday, Tuesday collections on Thursday, Wednesday customers on Friday, and Thursday customers on Saturday. Normal schedules will resume the following week. 

Duke Lemur Center welcomes its newest member

The Duke Lemur Center is celebrating the birth of a male lemur born to a sifaka lemur named Gisela, the daughter of Zoboomafoo, the late lemur, and star of the PBS children’s show. The tiny lemur, yet to be named,  arrived during the winter storm this past weekend. 

Duke University's new partnership increasees access for high-achieving, low-income students

Duke University is partnering with QuestBridge, a California-based nonprofit that helps connect high-achieving, low-income students with selective universities by providing a single, digital meeting point where prospective students can find member universities, scholarship providers, enrichment programs, and employers. Students who apply and are accepted to Duke through the QuestBridge application process will receive full scholarships.

Teamworks signs deal with Arizona Cardinals

Teamworks, founded by former Duke Football player Zach Maurides, announced that the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals have enlisted its services to enhance team communication. The company is a  leading provider of collaboration software and has helped athletic teams, departments, and organizations across the country improve the way they share information and communicate.
